BROOKLYN, N.Y.–

Although it wasn’t the Green Bay Phoenix, Alec Brown is playing for Phoenix again.. The Phoenix Suns, that is. Brown, standing at 7’1″, is a four-year player from the University of Green Bay that was the all-time shot-blocking leader in Horizon League history. Despite being 7’1″, Brown is a dead-eye mid-range shooter, along with being able to nail the three-ball. The Suns brought Brown in for numerous workouts and were instantly impressed with him following his 18-for-25 shooting performance at the NBA combine. For a power forward, his shooting is eye opening, and the Suns proved that at pick number 50.

Defensively is where Alec Brown made his name at Green Bay, consistently knocking balls out of the air and quickly becoming on of the too shot-blocking players in the country. Also, Alec Brown consistently made the All-Horizon League Defensive Team, beginning his sophomore season. Although Brown won’t notch a whole lot of minutes in his rookie season with the Suns, he will supply some shot blocking, as I mentioned before, that the Suns were not used to with their 16th-ranked shot-blocking defense last year, according to TeamRankings.com.

Brown is very slim, so having him post-up in the big leagues is going to be an issue. If Brown can bulk up, at 7’1″ that would be effective for the Suns. Brown fits into the system that Phoenix is running, it’s just a matter of becoming an all-around player, which he is already evolving into, and Brown could become an extremely successful second round pick.

Strouf’s Note:

I cover the GB Phoenix, and I have obviously spoken to Brown numerous times. I found a picture a few weeks back of me interviewing Brown after the Phoenix clinched the regular season Horizon League title. I’m 6’1”, so this just shows how tall Brown actually is.
