The Morning After: Packers Select Damarious Randall

CHICAGO–

It was an unexpected shocker of a draft pick, but who would expect anything less from the Packers’ Ted Thompson?

The Packers were expected to address the ridiculous need of cornerback or inside linebacker at pick number thirty, and they…sort-of…did.

Green Bay knew who their man was well before tonight, because at pick 27 I was already getting texts from guys inside that said “Randall, defensive back.”

Damarious Randall, a safety from Arizona State University, stands at 5’10” and about 200 pounds. He’s undersized for a defensive back, but still displays a tremendous amount of speed and ability to shine at the position.

With that being said, it was interesting to see the Packers go with a guy that played safety in college and try to do one of their famous crossovers that seem to never really work out. Ted Thompson seemed confident on Thursday night that Randall could play cornerback–and well, at that, saying at all of his pressers that Randall will come in day one and be a cornerback.

With a guy like Eric Kendricks, a natural at inside linebacker, still on the board, you wonder if Thompson’s  madness will pay off.
