Where it All Started: Aramis Ramirez traded to Pirates

MILWAUKEE, WI-  Well we finally saw the first deal go down for the Milwaukee Brewers.  Milwaukee has sent veteran third baseman Aramis Ramirez to the division rival Pittsburgh Pirates hours before Thursdays game in Arizona.  This couldn’t end more perfectly for Aramis Ramirez.  He was signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent to begin his career.  He played with Pittsburgh from 1998-2003 before joining the Chicago Cubs.  This is good for Aramis Ramirez, he is now on a contending team to give it one more run before hanging up the cleats.  And it can’t be a better way for Aramis doing it from where he started.  Aramis should continue getting a lot of playing time with the injuries of Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison.  We may even see him play some first base when everyone is healthy for the Pirates.

Milwaukee received 23 year old right handed relief pitcher Yhonathan Barrios.  Barrios used to be a third baseman later converted to a pitcher.  Not too important, but he is also a switch hitter.  Barrios has an ERA of 3.12 in his minor league career, he can throw pretty hard, definitely not a bad investment for Milwaukee.  With Aramis hanging it up at end of the year, you’re not going to get something much better for him.  Barrios could have a solid role in the bullpen next season, maybe a possible setup man for Will Smith assuming K-Rod will be one of the next guys traded for Milwaukee.  Either way, Milwaukee has nothing to lose with this trade.

Hernan Perez will have the first shot at third base.  Perez has really turned it around since being claimed by Milwaukee after being waived by Detroit.  He looks like an entirely different player then he did in Detroit.  So this will be a fun challenge for him to see if he can keep the job.  Perez got the start Thursday night in Arizona, and went one for three with two strikeouts.  Mike Fiers had some interesting performance striking out ten batters in just five innings.  In fact nine of his last ten outs in the game were strikeouts.  However he still allowed five runs; four which were earned.  Milwaukee loses a tough one tonight falling to the Diamondbacks 8-3.
